Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Illinois
I am a porcelain restorer. Last March a customer's daughter (at her mother's request) dropped off a fairly valuable Lladro statue for extensive repairs and agreed to my fee of $525 in writing. I followed up with a phone call to the owner who verbally agreed to the fee. A few weeks later I called the owner to tell her the work had been completed and could pick up the statue at time of payment. Within the past 6 months there have been additional phone calls and one written request. My question is what are the guidelines within abandonment laws that would allow me to sell the Lladro to be paid for my work? Also, what clause can I add to my work agreement to protect myself in the future? Thank you.

Do you want the statue or do you want to pursue payment for the work you've done? In any event, you might want to consider engaging a lawyer to write a demand letter. Your agreements should address cost of legal fees for collection and length of time wherein an item will be deemed abandoned.
