Legal Question in Consumer Law in Illinois

Verbal Contract broken

I attend a online school when I was talking to the recruiter he told me one of many reasons I should choose the school over other online schools is the fact I can walk in a graduation ceremony at any of there land campuses of my choosing if I was willing to pay for the travel costs. This was a big factor in my decision to attend this school. I graduate in September and when I contacted the career services coordinator about putting my request in to attend a land ceremony in febuary I received a email stating that this is no longer an option and it was not a formal offer it was informal because future wise they will not be able to accomadate graduates of a online program because 1000 will be graduating at a time. Now they will be doing virtual graduations for online students. I feel I am not receiving what was expected when I paid my money. I have been printing out comments from other students that were told the same thing when talking to a recruiter. I also have a newsletter from the school letting students know to contact the career services to get a seat at a land ceremony. I want to know do I have legal rights?

Re: Verbal Contract broken

You may have a cause of action, but you must consider, what are your actual, provable damages,

before deciding to go forward.

I suspect, although they may be emotionally large for you, these damages may be virtually nil in terms of what a court or jury could award you under the applicable law.

Re: Verbal Contract broken

You may have a claim for fraud under an Illinois law which provides remedies to consumers for misrepresentation. As you appear to have some documentation as to the claim made to you by this school, your case may be a strong one.
