Legal Question in Immigration Law in Illinois

My boyfriend is an illegal immigrant. How long would it take for him to become if US citizen if we get married? would he have to go back to his country of origin?

You need to provide a lot of additional information to enable a lawyer to answer your question.

If a boyfriend is an illegal immigrant who came to USA illegally without a visa, yes, he will have to go back to his home country to apply for a visa and a waiver.

If he came legally on a visa and has a proof of it, then he might be eligible to apply for a Green Card without having to depart the USA.

In addition, he'd not be eligible for USA citizenship even if you marry him. What he can apply for is called "permanent residency" or a Green Card. Only after being a permanent resident for a certain number of years and meeting all other requirements, can a person apply for US citizenship.
