Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois
I have a one year lease and can no longer afford my apartment. The lease requires me to continue to pay until the end of our lease. Is there any way that we can get out of our lease? Our apartment complex offers 6 month leases and we were not aware of that or else we would have taken that.

Thank you for your question. It is unlikely that your landlord would allow you to simply walk away from the lease. However, some leases contain language that provide for a lesser penalty for breaking the lease. At the same time, you could always try to settle with them, but I'm assuming they would want a hefty payment. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.
