Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois

Real Estate, Civil law

We have a non-profit corporation

neighborhood association in Illinois.

We have been sued and the judge is telling us to show up with an attorney. Can we legally represent

ourselves in this matter?

Re: Real Estate, Civil law

Unfortunately, you will have to hire counsel to represent you. Illinois law does not allow for a corporation, even if it is a not for profit to represent itself.

Re: Real Estate, Civil law

It appears that you are saying that the homeowners association incorporated as a non-profit corporation with the state of Illinois.

A corporation must have an attorney representing it in court, so no, you cannot represent yourself. A corporation is a separate entity / person in the eyes of the law.

Please note that the information provided does not constitute legal advice, nor does it in any way create an attorney client relationship.
