Legal guardianship

If i order a form to petition for guardianship of a minor child, can i file this with the courts in la. Or do i need to go through an attorney? The sole parent of the child wishes the guardianship and there is no known father. Thank you for any advice you can give me. Lk gomez

Re: Legal guardianship

First of all, I assume the "sole" parent you are speaking of is the mother. I guarantee you she knows who the father is. You may mean by saying there is "no known father," that you won't divulge his name, or his whereabouts are unknown. You are interested in getting a judgment giving you sole custody of your child. Unless there is a reason that you feel a judgment is necessary, as the mother, you, or she, does not need a judgment. If you are not the mother, and what you meant to say is that the mother wanted you to have guardianship (not a term we use), then the mother can give you custody by mandate or you can petition the court. The person wanting the custody can file in proper person without an attorney, but a non-attorney cannot do that on your behalf, because that would be practicing law without a license.
