Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Maryland

I live in the State of Maryland. I was recently contacted by a debt collection agency for monies owed for a gym membership in 1988. I vaguely remember canceling the contract back then. I have never been contacted by the establishment or a debt collection agency until now. Am I obligated and/or legally bound to pay? What steps should I take? Thanks for your advice!

You should file a notice of intention to defend the lawsuit. You may have a defense based on your cancellation of the membership, and the claim may also be barred by the statute of limitations. Please check out my blog: www.marylanddebtdefense. It has more information on defending cases such as these. If you have further questions, please email me at [email protected]. But, above all, defend yourself. Do not ignore this. Good luck.
