Legal Question in Criminal Law in Maryland

Can I get a criminal conviction sealed on the grounds that it was obtained illeagally. The charge unfortunately is from 2000, but it is affecting me getting a job.

No, criminal convictions cannot be sealed.

However, you may be able to challenge the conviction either by postconviction or coram nobis, because you indicate that it was obtained illegally. Beware that signigicant resources can be consumed obtaining old records, if they are available, in order to determine whether you have an issue to litigate.
