Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Maryland

Holding mail

An ex-roommate of mine has received, and told me that they have received, an important piece of mail addressed to me. However, because this person harbors negative feelings for me they are holding on to it and not letting me get it. What can be done about this?

Re: Holding mail

Tell this person that it is a federal offense to do this and you will pursue criminal charges if they don't release the item to you immediately. If you know where they are, tell them you're coming over to pick it up. If that doesn't work, contact the U.S. Attorney's office for an appointment to file charges.

The answer by Mr. Sher is right on point. Another source that may assist you if he doesn't give you the mail is the US Postal Inspection Service. www.postalinspectors.uspis.gov.
