Legal Question in Construction Law in Michigan

Suing a Contractor

I paid $9K to a contractor to turn my basement into a finished living space. He took the job but stopped halfway and hasn't been seen since over a year and a half ago. Further, he didn't purchase all of the materials and much of the work, had to be redone. How do I go about suing him to get back at least $4K of my money back?

Re: Suing a Contractor

If you know the whereabouts of the contractor or his company, then it's worth pursing an action for breach of contract. Unless he has a defense, seems like a clear winner to me. You would have to sue in the district court either where the work occurred (your house) or where the contractor currently lives/conducts business. If you want assistance or would like a lawyer to take the matter on a contingency basis, please contact me.

Thanks and good luck.

The easiest way would be to file a suit in small claims court in the county where you live. In general, there cannot be any attorneys in small claims court. I am unsure of the amount you can sue for but I believe it is the range of 5000.00 at most.

Good luck!
