Legal Question in DUI Law in Michigan

What are my choices of defense?

My friend is on the border line between impaired or dui.(one reading at impaired and one at dui) Should he plead guilty to dui and not guilty to impaired?

Does he need to have a lawyer? What if he can't afford one? Can he get a court appointed attorney for dui?

Please help...

Thank you

Re: What are my choices of defense?

Hello: I have received a copy of your e-mail regarding your boyfriend's DUI charge. Please, please have him consult with an attorney, preferably a private one that can give him essential information. Tell the lawyer you want to pay him/her for an hour of time so that your friend can make an intelligent decision. Make sure that the attorney is very experienced in the defense of DUI matters. If your boyfriend ultimately decides that he can't afford a lawyer to represent him, he can ask the Court to appoint one for him. The consequences of an alcohol conviction are too great to make a decision without knowing the defenses available to him. Feel free to have him contact my office for an appointment if he desires. Re: What are my choices of defense?

He should plead not guilty. A pretrial will be set and he can either talk to the prosecutor himself (not the best idea), hire an attorney, for ask for the court-appointed attorney to work out a plea deal.
