Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

adopting family out of state

Are there laws in Michigan that would prohibit us from adopting my great neice and nephew? They have been in foster care for over a year now. The parents parental rights will be terminated. We live in Colorado and are going to start getting foster care licensed, etc. Major question...would family be considered higher priority or the foster family? We have a large family and no one was called from the agency to see if anyone would care for them.

There is definitely a preference for family, but you have to get in to the court and get involved. Call the court and send a letter stating your interest, and make sure that you start forming a relationship with the child. Ask for and use any visitation the court grants you.

The preference is always what is best for the child, and you don't have to have a foster license if your intention is to adopt.

There is no reason that you could not adopt the children. Get the process rolling, the sooner the better. Bill Stern 248-353-9400
