Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

Adoption

My ex-wife left me and my son 9yrs ago. She has not tried to have contact with him in 9yrs. We have not seen or heard from her in all this time My new wife wants to adopt him.

Does my ex-wife have to be involved? Does my ex-wife have any legal grounds to stop the adoption?

Re: Adoption

Your ex-wife will have to be notified of the adoption proceedings. She will have the ability to contest the adoption, but if she has made no attempt to contact your son, it might be possible to have her sign a consent (if you know how to get a hold of her) to the adoption. Whether she'd prevail with contesting the adoption depends on the circumstances. I'd recommend speaking with an attorney that works with adoptions about this.
