Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Michigan
Jailed for Nonpayment of civil judgment
Can a citizen be jailed for contempt of court because he/she was unable or unwilling to pay a debt to a creditor who was awarded a judgment? If the answer is no could I have some president or statute supporting the answer?

Re: Jailed for Nonpayment of civil judgment
If the creditor arose out of child support or other domestic issue, the answer is yes. If the judgment is from a regular civil debt, the answer generally is no. I'd have to know more about how the judgment arose in order to give a more definitive answer. Bill Stern 248-353-9400
