Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Michigan
Eviction
I subleased my apartment to a relative who did not pay the rent after 3 months. I did not know about eviciton. Only learned about it at lease end when I went to get stuff out of storeage unit in basement. The aparment complex threw away all my stuff. They had my previous address employer and telephone number and never tried to contact me. IS THIS LEGAL????HELP PLEASE.

Re: Eviction
No. It is not legal. There is a protocol to be followed. Itemize the list of your property providing the fair market value of the property. Demand that they reimburse you for the property or alternatively demand that they provide you with proof that they have complied with the law in gaining access to and taking possession of your property. Send them a certified letter return receipt requested.
Depending on their response, you may sue them in district court for the value of the property.
