Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Michigan

I owe on an apartment I no longer live in and never signed a lease for.

Back in May 2008, I moved into an apartment with a college friend. I went to the Landlord about moving in and he told me that I did not have to sign a lease because the apartment was in my roommates name.

In December 2009 I moved out and since then my roommate has not been paying the full months rent due to lack of second roommate. Now we are both being taken to court over $1,400 bill that is owed in unpaid rent.

Am I liable, even though I never signed anything regarding my stay at the apartment? Can my roommate turn around and sue me for not finding another roommate even though we never put anything in writing?

If you did not sign the lease and you did not expressly promise the landlord that you would pay the rent, then you should not be liable. For more information, please contact my office at (248)8513171.
