can the police search your car without asking you ?

Yes, if they have probable cause to believe there is contraband or weapons in the vehicle or,(which is more likely) if the car is subject to being impounded.
Just remember you cannot stop a police officer from searching your car for any reason. Wether they were legally entitled to the search is a question for the courts to be decide after the fact.
