Legal Question in Criminal Law in Minnesota

Scenario: I am working at a store register. A customer comes in and pays for an item.

After he leaves, I notice that he paid with a rare half-dollar, its value is possibly 12 dollars.

I take fifty cents of mine from my pocket and place it in the cash drawer and remove the half-dollar and put it in my pocket.

Question: Have I committed a crime ?

That is an interesting question.

First, from a practical standpoint, I do not believe a prosecutor would ever charge such a case out. Was it improper? Probably since you used your position to usurp a corporate opportunity or benefit.

I agree with Mr. Beaulier that a prosecutor would ever charge such a case out. I am not so sure it is improper though. Unless your employer is a coin dealer or has a policy prohibiting such an act you probably did nothing wrong, You need not lose any sleep over it.
