Legal Question in Family Law in Minnesota

Giving up Custody

I am considering giving up my 50/50 legal and physical custody of my child to her father and his wife. What does this do to me later down the road. do I have to pay child support? He has not followed our divorce decree for 9 years in regards to what he should have been paying me for medical insurance and her schooling.

Re: Giving up Custody

Thank you for the post.

Yours is a difficult decision. If the court allows you to terminate your parental rights and allow for a step-parent adoiption, prosepective child support would be eliminated. However, you would continue to owe any past due child support unless an agreement is reached with the person/entity owed the past support.
