Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Minnesota

So I made one of my former friends mad at me and he smashed the back window on my car. I don't want to screw him over and press charges right away, I want to give him a chance to repay his mistake before I do that. So my question is, can I file a police report to have the incident on record but hold off on pressing charges?

If you do not make a police report contemporaneous with the incident, it is unlikely charges can or will be filed in the future. If you do make a resport, it is likely charges will be filed.
