Re: Child Custody
Are the paternal grandmother and greatgrandmother planning on assisting the father in obtaining custody or are they going to file separate motions to obtain custody?
You need to file a motion to obtain custody. You would file that with the family court clerk in your county. Obtain a free consultation with an attorney and ask questions. Find out about fees, what the attorney is going to do, etc.
Contact the Legal Aid Society to see if they can assist you. Usually there is a long wait, but it may be your only option if you cannot afford an attorney.
Good luck and e-mail me at [email protected] to let me know what happens.
Re: Child Custody
Each county has a "Family Intake" Unit which can guide you through the process. Basically, you will have an interview with an intake officer who will assist you in preparing your application for custody and child support. Your boyfriend will be notified and there will be a Court Hearing if there is a dispute as to custody. Obviously, it is in your interest to have an experienced attorney on your side. Many attorneys will work with you with regard to fees; however, it will cost you some money, especially if the custody is substantially contested. In the final analysis, the court will determine custody based on the best interest of the child.
