Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New Jersey

My mother passed away in April 2010. I was named as a beneficiary in her will--a modest amount of money. I signed all the paperwork the attorneys sent me and promptly returned said paperwork to them. That was eight months ago. It is now Feb, 2011 and I have yet to receive any funds from her estate, no communications, nothing. How do I find out what is going on with my mother's estate without having to confront the executor directly? And, how long does it take on average for a beneficiary to receive his/her proceeds from a Last Will and Testament?

This situation seems very odd.

If you recieved a modest cash legacy under the will, and you have signed a refunding bond [I assume that is the 'paperwork' you refer to in your question] then typically, payment is made immediately. A delay of eight months is highly unusual. You should write a letter to the attorney immediately and demand payment of your inheritance.
