Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Child Support Question

My daughter is 15 years old and me and her father have never lived together. He's very distant from us. He did, however, vow to help my daughters financial needs, tuition, clothing, etc. He's been avoiding me for 4 months now and when I do get in touch with him, he hangs up. Is there enough time left to take him to court and try to get child support from him for my daughter? We live in New York. Thanks.

Re: Child Support Question

Yes. You may make application for child support. The petition is filed in Family Court in the county where you reside with the child. There is an intake office at the Family Court that will help you with the papers. There is no statute of limitations period to seek child support. Child support in NY is until the child turns 21 years, or until emancipation, whichever is earlier.
