Legal Question in Family Law in New York
Was he divoced?
He was married with two kids, and just walked out in 1949. He got remarried in NY in 1956. Is there a way to check if he ever bothered to get a divorce from his first wife?

An individual must go to court to obtain a divorce. However, court records from a divorce are sealed.
Therefore, if you go to the county where the individual lived between 1949 and 1956, you may conduct an investigation to determine if a divorce action was commenced. However, you would not be able to read the Judgment of Divorce unless you received an Order from a Judge.
