Citizenship

I am a Canadian teacher here on a J-1 visa that is good for three years. I am interested in staying permanently and would like to know my options on how to do so. Can I only go through employers or can I obtain citizenship on my own? Thank you for your time!

The first thing for you to do is to find out if the Two Year Foreign Residence Requirement (Section 212(e) of the INA) applies to your case. The information that was put into your passport by the DOS and on your DS-2019 may not be correct. You need an employer...do labor certification then I-140 & 485 to adjust.

Permanent residence (a green card) can only be obtained through limited means - typically family, employment, investment, or asylum. If you would like to explore any of these options, you may contact my office. You will also need to check your passport endoresment to determine if a 2 year foreign residency requirement will apply to your situation.
