Legal Question in Employment Law in Pennsylvania
Release of information to former employer
I worked for someone a few years ago in Virginia as an independent contractor. We had a very messy and ugly parting of the ways. Recently I filed a form with the IRS that determined that I was an employee, instead of an independent contractor.
This has caused the former employer to file back tax returns. He recently contacted me, stating that he needed my current address and social security number for the returns, or that I could give the information to his accountant.
Due to my lack of trust in this individual, I am very hesitant to release this information to him or anyone associated with him.
Is it necessary that I disclose my current address and social security for the back tax returns? I am currently residing in Pennsylvania.

Re: Release of information to former employer
You asked if it was necessary to provide your social security number and address to a former employer.
Simple answer, yes. The employer must request the information and if you do not provide it the employer must report that fact. Further you will have to file additional paperwork in order to be credited with the payments the employer made. Fact is even as an independent contractor the employer should have had your information and been making 1099 reports on his payments to you.
