Social Security

My son is two years old, his biological father (who does not live with us and is married to another woman) will begin getting SS benefits in September 2008 when he turns 62; I understand that minor children can collect SS, will my son be able to collect also

Thanks you for your assistance in this matter

Re: Social Security

O.K that clears it up - he's getting retirement benefits not SSI or disability.

Yes, your son may be entitled to a benefit because his father is retired. Here's what the SSA says:

"Your child can get benefits if he or she is your biological child, adopted child or dependent stepchild.

To get benefits, a child must have:

A parent who is disabled or RETIRED and entitled to Social Security benefits; or

A parent who died after having worked long enough in a job where he or she paid Social Security taxes."

So in the event that the child's father dies, the child may still receive a benefit.

When you apply for benefits for your child, you will need the childs birth certificate and the parents and childs Social Security numbers. Depending on the type of benefit involved, other documents may be required.
