Legal Question in Civil Litigation in South Carolina

owners responsibility for domestic cats

I own 6 cats and 2 dogs, is there a limit on how many pets one can have? Also if my cats sleep on a neighbors car and/or scratch it, am I responsible for the damage? Can I be forced to confine them? They are outside animals. Thank you

Re: owners responsibility for domestic cats

I don't know of any limitation of the number of dogs and cats, but your particular city, town or county may have an ordinance limiting the number of dogs or cats a person can have on his property. Dogs normally should be confined in a fenced area. South Carolina does have a statute regarding dogs, and you may be held liable is they injure someone. Also, if you maintain your property in such a way that your property constitutes a nuisance to your surrounding neigbors, you may be subject to suit on a "nuisance" theory. If your neighbors claim that you have reduced their property values by maintaining a "nuisance" in the neighborhood, this could run into quite a bit of money, so if I were you, I would take some precautions regarding the animals running loose. The fact that a cat scratched a car could be one of your least concerns.
