Re: Tennessee Marital Law

When a married couple gets divorced the law requires that there be an equitable division of marital assets. This does not necessarily mean a 50-50 split although it might. Also, only MARITAL property is to be divided. Personal property that has been kept separate and apart from the other spouse is not likely to be considered marital property. Marital property includes property shared by the couple during the marriage. It includes income and pension plans acquired during the marriage, but not gifts or inheritance. For example, if you inherit $50,000 and put it in a separate bank account from your spouse, at the time of the divorce that $50,000 is yours to keep.
