Legal Question in Medical Leave in Tennessee

FMLA in regard to minor child

My 16-yr old daughter is pregnant and due to give birth at the end of June. She'll be 17 by that time. I have already informed my supv and director that I will be taking either sick-dependent time or vacation time, or both, when it is time for the birth. I have asked our HR dept if I may use FLMA for pregnancy-related time off with my daughter before she's due, such as dr appts etc and was told ''we aren't sure''. I was also told that in order to take FMLA I would have to have a doctor's note stating that I was the only one who could care for my daughter and baby after the birth. Do I have to have a note? And does it need to be ''medically'' necessary for me to be with her or can I use FMLA in order to be with her until she is ready to care for this baby on her own? At what point before the due date should I request FMLA?

Re: FMLA in regard to minor child

You will want to make your FMLA request as soon as possible. This way you can work out any potential problems with your FMLA leave beforehand, as opposed to after the fact.
