How do I file a written answer to the plaintiff''s petition in a new civil lawsuit?

1. Put the caption/heading at the top of the page, just like you see it on the petition. That's the part that has the cause number along with the parties names and the designation of the court ("In the County Court at Law Number ...").
2. Title it "Defendant's Original Answer."
3. In the body, put "Comes now Joe Smith, Defendant, and answers the Plaintiff's lawsuit as follows: Defendant enters a general denial."
4. Sign it, and make a signature block containing your name, address, and phone number.
5. File the original with the District Clerk, or the County Clerk, or the JP (as appropriate).
6. Mail a copy to the Plaintiff's lawyer.
