Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas

I am being sued by a privately owned building supply company in Texas. I am a roofing contractor and fell on hard times about 3 years ago. Long story short, I couldn't pay on my account there for awhile.A few months go by and I paid 2000.00 on it. I still owed about 8000.00 on it. By the way I have no kind of contract with them and never signed anything. It was just a verbal agreement. Then suddenly, they started adding all this outrageous interest to my bill and never showed my payment of 2 grand.I have my reciept for it. I tried talking to them, to no avail.I have since stopped paying all together. Can they tack on very high intrest like that? They are not a finance company, and i have no contract with them. I dont mind paying for the principle. Oh yeah, his best friend is the judge,. Isn't that a conflict of interst? I am semi retired now and draw my social security. What can happen to me? My wife? Should i hire an attorney? I'm going nuts down here in texas.
