Legal Question in Criminal Law in Texas
Payment for Recovered Stolen Property
An 18 year old stole clothing in the amount of approx $400.00 from a department store. The store had the person arrested and recovered the property the same day. This person has now indicated that she has received a bill from the department store indicating that she must pay for the stolen property. Is it legal for the department store to bill the offender for recovered stolen property?

Re: Payment for Recovered Stolen Property
What is normal is for the merchant to bill the thief for the cost of catching the theif. I have never seen a store bill the thief for the item after it has been recovered.
