An individual's medical records are protected by the Privacy Act. They are not available to those not authorized by the patient. There are certain exceptions such as when medical issues are in litigation and waivers are often given when applying for life insurance, but under ordinary conditions it can result in civil liability for a company to release confidential medical records without written permission to do so from the subject of the records.
