Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Texas

We have a friend that passed away 2 weeks ago that lives out of town. He had left a section of land in a will he showed us years ago, but we have no idea who the administrator is, plus our friend was a loner so there is nobody to ask any info.We mainly want to find out if the will he made years ago is still valid. The probate people at county clerk said we would have to travel to their office just to find out if it is in probate. Please advise if you can. Thanks, James Jones

If your friend only died 2 weeks ago it is unlikely the Will is already in probate. Unless you were to inherit the land, what difference does it make? When, if, the Will is probated, it should be probated in the county where the land is located.
