Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia
Rights to step-fathers past history
Do I have a right to know the grounds as to why my ex-wifes husband lost custody of his children when the mother was a proven drug-user? My children have said that he is verbally abusive (yelling and cussing) and my children came to me (when visitation occured) and told me that he pushed one of them into the wall and held him up by his throat. My ex did nothing about it (police were not called), when I confronted her about it she got really defensive and threatened that I would not get to see my children as much. At the time, I did not know what to do since my child told me after the fact.

No, I see no basis as to why the law should at the moment give you the right you've referenced.
However, if your former wife's current husband is physically abusing your children, that would certainly give you a basis to challenge the
current custody arrangement and(assuming you filed suit) during the pendency of the suit, you would likely be entitled to the information you've mentioned during the discovery process preceding the trial of the custody case.
