Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in West Virginia

executor

My aunt died in January and a friend of hers who was a bookkeeper at their company was named executor in the will. He was not appointed until April 9. However, he changed the locks on the house immediately and was in and out many, many times before being appointed. He had appraisers in the house on 2 occassions in February. Was he legal in doing this between the time of her death and his appointment?
