Legal Question in Family Law in Georgia

My 15 year old son wants to move to Georgia from New Jersey, to live with me. Initially his mother was going to allow it. Now she said she would do whatever she had to do to keep him there. We divorced in California in 2000. She's prepared to fight this thing out. She told me that I can't legally take him from the state if she doesn't want me to do so. Does it matter that our divorce was filed in California? What can I do from here? He really wants out. She and her current husband are mentally abusive and I can't allow him to live with it anymore. I don't have a bunch of money to draw this out in court for a long time. Thank you for any and all help!

Georgia does not have jurisdiction (unless you have an agreement and uncontested case). As a general rule you would need a lawyer in the state where she lives now. Be aware that contested custody cases are expensive, but if your child matters and you feel the change is warranted, then you'll simply need to find the money (maybe a loan, etc).
