if your rental property was broken into and your posessions were stolen ; who pays for the damages at the site of the break-in?

It is not the responsibility of the landlord to protect your property from theft. You may have some argument if the lock was messed up and the landlord was told before the theft and did nothing. However, generally, it is the responisbility of the tenant to protect his or her goods. Bill Stern
