Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Pennsylvania

Liability

We live in a duplex. Our half has a ramp. The other half has steps. The girl on the other side slipped on her icy front porch steps. Are any of us tenants responsible for keeping our entrances de-iced or is it the landlords' responsibility?

Re: Liability

You asked about liability for exterior maintainence of a rental duplex.

That's a good question. Generally in a rental situation, the owner of a multi-unit dwelling in responsible for exterior maintainence whereas the tenants in a single family rental are responsible. Such as shoveling and de-icing would be included in exterior maintainance.

But I don't know about this situation. It depends on how the rental units are owbed and the way they are treated in the local law. Unfortunately, in answering questions on this site we generally do not do research so my answer can't be any more specific than it depends.

If there is an issue you should consult a local attorney and s/he will review your lease and the applicable law.
