Legal Question in Legal Ethics in California

I was engaged to be married in July 2010, due to some very in appropriate behavior I ended the engagement. Her father has since sent me bills for the deposits that he has arranged for the wedding and wants me to pay half. I want to know if I'm responcible for these deposits, I invested 5,000 in a ring that she still has and will not return. Half of the deposit would be $3,900.00

She can keep the ring, and her father has no rights to any money from you unless you signed contracts agreeing to pay the bills. I would just write her father a letter about why you called off the engagement and suggest he sell the ring if he wants money so badly. Good luck!
