Legal Question in Medical Leave in Indiana
Family Emergency Leave
My 80+ year old father has recently had 2 visits to the hospital for internal problems, ie ulcers/ intestinal colitis. I have been very concerned with his hydration and nutrition in addition to over zealous doctors wanting to perform dangerous and what has been found unneccessary surgury. My employer has been very patient with me in all this while I been taking off time to deal with this and my parents finances taxes and what not. I really appreciate this but have been told they are required to do this. I am a truck driver and get paid for only the miles I drive. Have these people been really cool or are they just doing what the law requires? Am I entitled to other things from them such as compensation. The company normally are kind of stingy and I have been told I have been overly appreiciative about their actions. Am I being a chump?

Re: Family Emergency Leave
Employers of more than 50 employees are required to provide up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave for employees who must care for a parent spouse or child with a serious health condition. The employer can require a doctor's certification re the serious health condition and that your services are needed. The leave can be intermittent.
It sounds like your employer is doing what is required although a bit informally as you didn't mention any required documentation. No compensation is required
Re: Family Emergency Leave
You are probably entitled to up to 12 weeks of FMLA unpaid leave upon proper request and documentation to the employer.
