Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland
If I live in Maryland, resided in Baltimore City, am now staying with family in Baltimore County, as I needed to leave my husband, do I have to do anything formally before filing taxes? Reconciliation is possible but not likely, but I do not have any unnecessary resources to expend on this.

You have the option of filing married, filing separately. This option is open to all married couples (separated or happily married).

IRS recognizes a "legal" separation to file individually. Unfortunately Maryland does not recognize a status. You can file married but filing separately. You should ensure that your tax obligation is met as penalties may apply. Ensure your estranged spouse agrees to avoid inconsistent filings.
