Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Michigan

Garnishment

When a debt is being collected and the collection agency decides to garnish your bank account... is that a one-time garnishment? Or will it continue to occur? I was told they were not allowed to garnish wages in this particular case, but since wages are direct deposited into that bank account... is the money still in danger of being garnished? Not that there is much money there, if that were the case the debt would already be paid off. The few funds that are there are from recent wages and are needed to pay the most immediate bills (Mortgage, utilities, groceries, etc...).

Re: Garnishment

I have never heard of a collection agency garnishing a bank account. It is generally a law firm acting on behalf of a creditor.

Bank garnishments are a one-shot deal, and not continuous. You would be wise to close your account at that bank and open an account at a bank they don't know about, because they can do it again.
