Legal Question in Consumer Law in New Jersey

Contract

We hired a contractor to cut down trees. He thought the town would take the debris but when they didn't, we paid for it. He said we did not owe him the balance one day, then said we did. We refused to pay him, now he says its stated in the contract, and will sue us.The town ord states the contractor is responsible. There is fine print on the contract we do not understand. He also fixed a fence he damaged, and now wants us to pay for it.We tricked him into fixing it because we thinks he is lying to us about us paying for the cleanup. The contract said he was to remove the logs, when he didn't and said we owed him nothing, we hired another co. to do this at our expense. We said we would pay the balance to avoid being sued, but didn't after finding out he was responsible under the town ord. even though he was not a Comm. Landscaper.
