Legal Question in Family Law in Ohio
Emancipation ?
My daughter Turned 18 in April of 2003. My case was from Ohio but, moved to michigan in 1993 as I moved to that state. I stopped paying support when she turned 18. My records indicated that also and I had the local (FOC) in Midland look at there reacords also. Same conclusion . It stopped at 18 years of age. Got a nice letter from the state of ohio telling me that she emancipated at the age of 18 and my obligation was done. I recieved a letter yesterday telling me that my case was reopen (1987) and I now owe a large arrearage on top of the current amount due each weekback to June 2003. Letter said it was because she was in college(daughter has been hit and miss between full and part time) . My paper work does not have this nor does the paper work in that the court in michigan has. They want the money and I really do not know what to do. Since the original order was filed I have had another child (1994) , gotten married, lost my job in 2003. How do I contact first ? The ( FOC) in Michigan who had the open case till April 2003 ? Ohio ? Or start with an Attorney ?

Re: Emancipation ?
It sounds like a Friend of the Court screw-up, which does happen. Rather than spends tons of time doing it yourself, hire a good, inexpensive family law attorney in your area. If you have trouble finding one to work inexpensively, call the local bar referral service and get a young lawyer that does this work. Sometimes you can get a referral from the judge's clerk.
