civil tort?

my boyfriend assaulted me in aug. 06 i would like to sue him , i have contacted lawyers but the want a retainer and i cant afford one. he has money and property, dairy farmers. i had to get 20 stitches to lip and would like to sue for damages, time out of work due to ptsd. how do i file on my own
