Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas

Creditors & bill collectors calling neighbors and family members

As my phone number is unlisted, creditors & bill collectors are now calling my neighbors (including next door and the people next to them). Is that legal? What can I tell my neighbors to tell them?

My next door neighbor called the bill collector ''slime'' after realizing that this person calling was not a friend of her's or mine and he went off on her with a cursing tangent. Surely those calls are recorded.

They are also calling family members. What can I do to make this harassment stop? If I could pay them, I would.

Thank you in advance for any advice you can offer.

Re: Creditors & bill collectors calling neighbors and family members

The debt collector has the right to call other people to find out your location. That is it. They cannot say anything else, cannot reveal your personal information and if they are harassing, etc. both you and them have a cause of action against them under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. If they have your address, that is all they need. You can write them and tell them to cease any and all communications with you, that you prefer to deal with the original creditor and they are supposed to stop, under the law.
