Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

do i have any recourse?

aproximately 2 weeks ago i asked the office manager to clarify two issues for me. 1. the company discount policy 2. why after 11.5 years i was no longer receiving sick/vac leave. I was told that policies were changing and i was a ''barely'' part time employee. I told her that she needed to notify me of changes in writing if they were diffrent than my original verbal contract with the owner. I was told i was becoming ''a problem'' and hung up on. when i called to get my hours for feb. I spoke w/the owner and was not given any specific answers. i was told i had been left off the schedule. today i received a letter in the mail stating that my services are no longer needed. I still have an outstanding balance at the practice and at this point have unrecovered sick and vacation pay. do i have any recourse?

Re: do i have any recourse?

No, I'm afraid not, such is life in an employment at will jurisdiction such as the Commonwealth of Virginia, unless you were working under the protection of a contract which guaranteed certain rights and protections which would normally include your right to be paid for unused sick and annual leave in the event of your termination from the company as well as your right to be protected from summary termination without sufficient just cause.

I suspect, of course, that, unfortunately, there was no such contract in your particular situation (as with the majority of employees

in the Commonwealth), which, as I previously mentioned, effectively leaves you without recourse or remedy.
