SUED for Credit Card Debt

I am being sued for an old credit card bill. I've been issued a summons and need to respond. I would actually like to pay what I owe, but it seems like they are trying to sue me for more than my original bill plus add on all this interest and costs. How do I go about answering this summons? Do I need a lawyer? Where would I find the right kind of lawyer for this?
